Everything on this page is the work of Pei, the damned sexy hippy, unless clearly specified otherwise.  I am ALWAYS happy to learn more however, so feel free to reach out to me at damned.sexy.hippy@gmail.com if there are any questions, or you have a comment, or want to correct me, or just want to say hi!

About Damned Sexy Hippy, the theory.

We are regularly (albeit lovingly) called "Damned Dirty Hippies!" by friends, and I've always been mildly (albeit lovingly) annoyed by that description.  I'm not dirty.  So this site grew out of that loving nickname, and the desire to make it easier for people who don't want dreadlocks and to smell like patchouli (not that these are bad things necessarily but they're not for everyone (example, they're not for me!).   I want long flowing soft shiny hair, and clear healthy skin.  But I want to do it with minimal impact on the planet and my wallet.

And I want to help other people do the same.

My intention is for this page to become, over time, a source to really look at the items that are in homes that can be used for beauty, specifically looking for things that are local, and in season (or storable long term).  It is going to start with small steps (where we are now) and grow from there.  This site is VERY MUCH under construction, and probably will be for some time, but feel free to drop me a line if you have a question, comment or idea!  damned.sexy.hippy@gmail.com

About Damned Sexy Hippy, the woman.

My husband, our daughter and I live on just shy of 9 acres in central NY, on a hill best known for getting a ton and a half of snow.  We have 18 chickens, 4 beehives, and a large garden that takes a huge portion of our time during the summer.  Our goal is a root cellar full of our own potatoes, and canned vegetables that we grew to last us through most of the winter.  We heat our home through a wood stove, using renewable wood, locally harvested, and take public transportation to and from work (except the days we miss the bus)..   Food we don't raise ourselves, we strive to purchase from local farmers and meat producers.  We re-buy as much as we can, and with the exception of shoes and underwear, clothing we wear is 90% from the local Salvation Army or consignment stores.

We're not perfect, by any means. But we try, really really hard.  And one day thinking about areas that I could improve on, it struck me that my beauty regime was full of petrochemical products that had been produced in questionable social conditions, shipped from who knows where, etc.  So I started looking into ways to stop putting my money into those products, without giving up on my appearance.
